Hike #09: Versant sud de la St Victoire, Carrière de Marbre; Refuge Baudino

A unique hike to discover the south side of the Sainte Victoire mountain, an ancient marble quarry and the refuge ‘Baudino’.

We will start with a steady climb up through scrubland to the old marble quarry, where you will see massive blocks of marble cut from the cliffs.

We then continue up to the refuge Baudino sometimes walking along narrow paths with steep drops. All along the way there are magnificent views over the valley below and towards Ste Baume, Mont Aurélien and le Pilon du Roi.

After the refuge, which was built in memory of a student who died on the mountain, we clamber over large rocks and then walk along scree paths, where sticks are useful.

We walk closely under the cliffs of Ste Victoire until descending to the meadows below, where you can look back upwards for stunning views of the mountain.

 

Nous vous proposons une randonnée unique pour découvrir le versant sud de la montagne Sainte Victoire, une ancienne carrière de marbre ainsi que l'écrin de verdure de l'invisible petit Refuge Baudino.

Nous commencerons par une montée régulière à travers la garrigue jusqu'à l'ancienne carrière de marbre, où vous verrez d'énormes blocs de marbre taillés dans les falaises.

Nous continuons ensuite vers le refuge Baudino en empruntant parfois des chemins étroits aux dénivelés prononcés. Tout au long du parcours, vous aurez une vue magnifique sur la vallée, sur la Ste Baume, le Mont Aurélien et le Pilon du Roi.

Après le refuge, qui a été construit à la mémoire d'un élève décédé sur la montagne, nous grimperons de gros rochers, puis emprunterons des éboulis où des bâtons de randonnée seront utiles.

Nous marcherons sous les falaises de la Ste Victoire jusqu'à une descente dans les prés, d’où vous pouvez avoir une vue imprenable sur la montagne.

From Aix, take the D17 going through Le Tholonet and Saint Antonin sur Bayon. After the Maison Sainte-Victoire park on the right in the second parking called ‘Parking du Champ du Chinois’
